Baptist Union City Offers New Service
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City now offers lithotripsy, a nonsurgical ultrasound treatment for kidney stones that uses high-powered sound waves to break up stones.
The process uses a lithotripter, a device produces ultrasound waves that pass easily through the soft tissues of the body. The kidney stones absorb the energy from these waves and break apart. Most fragments are then passed in the urine.
“I am very pleased that Baptist Union City is now offering lithotripsy,” said Dr. Paul Marsidi, a urologist. “With such advanced technology, this is a highly effective option for the treatment of kidney stones.”
Kidney stones are crystal masses that form from minerals and proteins found in urine. Stones come in various sizes and compositions. Certain types respond better to lithotripsy than others.
Recovery time for lithotripsy patients is considerably shorter than for patients treated with traditional surgical methods. However, this procedure does not prevent future stones from forming. To avoid future problems, patients should follow their physician’s therapy and dietary changes.
“Baptist Union City is delighted to add lithotripsy to our extensive list of services,” said Donald Hutson, administrator and CEO of Baptist Union City. “This is just another way Baptist Union City helps ensure a broad range of quality services are available locally.”
