Baptist Union City Offers New Procedure to Treat Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City is offering a new grafting procedure to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is an enlargement of the aorta, a main source of blood flow through the body, resulting in the weakening of the vessel wall. If an aneurysm ruptures, internal bleeding may cause death. Previously, patients with this condition required major surgery depending on the severity and size of the aneurysm. The procedure used in the past traditionally required a large incision and several days recovery time. With the new endovascular stent grafting procedure, a stent graft, which is a woven polyester tube (graft) covered by a tubular metal web (stent), is placed inside a diseased (aneurismal) vessel without surgically opening the tissue surrounding the diseased vessel. The stent graft, therefore, redirects normal blood flow away from the aneurysm. "This is a breakthrough in technology for patients who may be candidates for this new procedure," said Dr. Wright Jernigan, a vascular surgeon at Baptist Union City. "With endovascular stent grafting, there is less pain and discomfort for the patient and only a one to two day hospital stay." Jernigan recently performed the first procedure at Baptist Union City. Nearly 1.5 million Americans have been diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm and an estimated 200,000 new cases are reported each year. Eighty percent of cases result in death if they are untreated. The condition is four times more common in men than women and is more common in smokers.
