New Survey Will Make Patient Satisfaction Public

A new government-sponsored health care quality survey has been implemented at Baptist Memorial hospitals as a standardized measurement tool for comparisons between health care providers.

The Hospital-Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems is a mailed, paper survey for patients who receive inpatient care, and it is designed to assist consumers in making informed choices with public reporting of results.

“We’re happy to have yet another public measure to show the exceptional care we strive to provide,” said David Hogan, Baptist Memorial Health Care’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “Baptist also will be able to use the valuable patient feedback to further enhance our services and our care.”

HCAHPS measures the patient experience through the care from doctors and nurses, responsiveness of hospital staff, pain control, communication about medicines, cleanliness and quietude of the hospital environment and discharge information.

HCAHPS complements the Gallup Patient Satisfaction survey by asking more specific care questions, while Gallup assesses patients’ satisfaction with their care.

“Baptist’s nurses and the doctors who treat patients at our hospitals put patients first when it comes to care,” Hogan said. “It’s part of Service First, our customer service philosophy.”

Results of the survey following 100 completed questionnaires will be posted on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services at www.medicare.gov.

“As consumers have more choice in who provides their care, these types of surveys will prove to be an invaluable asset in allowing consumers to make an informed decision,” Hogan said. “Baptist has a long tradition of exceptional care, and we welcome the opportunity to participate in this initiative so our community can have as much information as possible about their care.”

HCAHPS Sample Questions

Here are sample questions about your care from nurses that patients will answer on the Centers for Medicaid Services Hospital-Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems. (Answer choices include: never, sometimes, usually and always).

During this hospital stay:
  • How often did nurses treat you with courtesy and respect?
  • How often did nurses listen carefully to you?
  • How often did nurses explain things in a way you could understand?
  • After you pressed the call button, how often did you get help as soon as you wanted it?

Baptist Union City Program Earns THA Award

The Tennessee Hospital Association’s Center for Health Workforce Development recently honored Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City’s Nurse Camp with its Workforce Leadership Award.

According to THA, the award is designed to recognize individuals or institutions that have made outstanding contributions in addressing Tennessee’s health care worker recruiting needs. Nurse Camp received one of only six awards given this year.

The only one of its kind in the Obion County area, the camp is held in early June for high school freshmen and sophomores. During camp, Baptist Union City staff nurses instruct students, who spend time in various departments, including the emergency department, medical-surgical unit and critical care. James Caldwell, chief nursing officer at Baptist Union City, created the program to offer area students the opportunity to observe nurses in action and to recruit future nurses. The camp is free of charge.

“I believe if we get students in the hospitals, we can show them what nursing is really about,” said Caldwell. “They will be able to see what we do here every day and learn about all the wonderful opportunities available to them.” Baptist Union City recently received a grant from the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation to fund Nurse Camp for the next five years. The grant, which totals more than $100,000, will support the camp and allow it to expand to accommodate interested high school juniors and seniors.

Founded in 1938, THA serves as an advocate for hospitals, home health agencies and other health care organizations and their patients. Its mission is to provide education and information for its members and inform the public about health care issues at the state and national levels.
