Baptist Union City began as Obion County General Hospital in 1950 with 60 beds. After becoming affiliated with Baptist Memorial Health Care in 1982, the hospital expanded and upgraded, adding 113 beds as well as new services and physician specialties. Today, Baptist Union City is an advanced, fully accredited 173-bed hospital that employs more than 400 professionals and generates more than $50 million in revenue and community benefit for Obion County.

Baptist Union City Timeline

1950- Gardner Construction Co. built the hospital. The design was for a 60-room facility.

1954- Forty beds were added in the south wing, and a new obstetrical unit and a new cafeteria opened.

1961- The hospital expanded again with the completion of the west wing-a three-story structure that contained an expanded laundry and maintenance area; 20 new beds; and a third floor, which was set aside for future use.

1966- The long-term nursing home unit was completed with 86 beds on the second and third floors. The expansion included the clearing out of the ground floor for future use and the addition of the east wing.

1970- The third floor of the west wing was finished, giving the hospital an additional 33 beds. That year, the hospital also opened its first coronary unit with four beds devoted to cardiac patients.

1977- Another major expansion involved the construction of space for ancillary services and the relocation of additional support services into renovated space at the hospital.

1982- The hospital became affiliated with Baptist Memorial Health Care.

1986- A new outpatient surgery department opened on the first floor, adjacent to the operating room suites.

1989- A new radiation oncology department was constructed, and the 20-bed behavioral health unit was renovated and modernized. The hospital acquired a new CAT scanner.

1990- The hospital's 14-bed critical care unit received computerized monitoring equipment to better provide vital readings such as heart rate, blood oxygen level, rate of respiration, and blood pressure. Soon afterward, the arrival of a new ultrasound unit enabled the radiology department to perform duplex carotid exams-a new service-and the hospital laboratory received an analyzer to provide physicians with faster, more precise results from blood tests.

1993- Two additional pieces of advanced equipment further updated care for patients: a single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) camera for diagnostic imaging and a simulator, which readies local cancer patients for radiation therapy, enabling them to eliminate drives of an hour or two to other hospitals to prepare for treatment.

1995- Construction was completed on a new, 85,000-square foot three-story patient tower. This construction program provided new patient rooms and tripled the size of the emergency department. Behavioral health services expanded to include an adolescent inpatient treatment program. The hospital opened Health Quest, a complete fitness and wellness center.

1998- The Baptist Medical Arts Center, a physicians' office building, opened. Baptist Rehab, located next to Health Quest, opened to provide outpatient rehab services.

1999- The Maternal Child Center opened. The unit includes LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum) rooms and a C-section room, as well as private room accommodations. A new outpatient services department was completed and offered an in-house cardiac catheterization laboratory and a new helical CT scanner.

2004- Radiation oncology services were moved to a new, 13,500-square-foot facility inside the Baptist Medical Arts Center.

2005- The hospital began offering the technically advanced HeartScore procedure. A Gallup Award for Healthcare Excellence was earned.

2005-Staff began using a filmless picture archiving communication system (PACS). By giving radiologists immediate access to images from CT scans, MRIs and other diagnostic procedures through a secure computer network, the PACS system helps patients get their diagnostic test results back more quickly.

2005-Baptist Union City was ranked among the nation's top 200 hospitals for its billing accuracy in the "Top 200 Coding Hospitals in the U.S." report conducted by Ingenix, a leading health information company.

20062006- Baptist Union City received the VHA Leadership Award for clinical excellence in cardiac care.

2006- Hospitalists, or physicians who only care for patients while they are in the hospital, began treating Baptist Union City inpatients. Because hospitalists are on-site 24 hours a day, they can respond quickly to sudden changes in patients' conditions.

2006- The hospital offered open MRI services in a new suite at the west entrance.

2006- Baptist Union City was once again ranked a Top 200 Coding Hospital in the U.S.

2006- The Tennessee Hospital Association's Center for Health Workforce Development honored Baptist Union City's Nurse Camp with its Workforce Leadership Award.

2007- Baptist Union City received the VHA Leadership Award for clinical excellence in cardiac care for the second consecutive year. The Baptist Union City campus became tobacco free.

2008- The Mammography Suite for Women opened in the radiology department. Baptist Union City received the VHA Leadership Award for clinical excellence in pneumonia care.
