The Baptist North Mississippi Weight Loss Center is accredited by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
Obesity in the United States has reached epidemic proportions, with more than 60 percent of our population now overweight. More Americans are eating out, and many tend to put convenience and taste ahead of nutritional content. Being overweight and obese are known risk factors for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, gallbladder disease, degeneration of cartilage and bone joints, sleep apnea and some forms of cancer.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
The Baptist Weight Loss Center offers options to help individuals whose Body Mass Index (BMI) indicates they are either overweight or obese.
BMI is the height-to-weight ratio of an individual and is determined by a mathematical formula. A BMI of 25-29.9 indicates an individual is overweight. A BMI of 30 or greater indicates an individual is obese, and a BMI greater than 40 is morbidly obese.

What are my options based on my BMI?
The Baptist Weight Loss Center has several options available to you:
- Renew: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions
For obese individuals, Renew: Healthy Lifestyle Solutions is a 12-week program offered to help patients deal with the interpersonal, emotional and lifestyle issues that often result in obesity. Coming Spring 2006
- Surgical Procedures
Surgical options such as laparoscopic banding or laparoscopic gastric bypass are performed by Dr. Michael King and Dr. Walker Byars of The Center for Bariatric Surgery (a division of the Surgical Center of North Mississippi).
How do I learn more about laparoscopic banding or laparoscopic gastric bypass?
Individuals interested in learning more about surgical solutions for weight loss are encouraged to attend one of the free education seminars hosted by Dr. King and Dr. Byars or call 1-800-976-5589.
