One of the most comprehensive heart care programs in North Mississippi is located in Oxford at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Here, physicians, nurses and other professionals work together to provide virtually every diagnostic and treatment option available in larger metropolitan areas. The heart program has grown considerably since its inception in 1986. The facilities and staff continue to increase in number and expertise. In 1994, Baptist North Mississippi installed the first truly digital lab in the United States. The Heart Care Center recently centralized its services to create a “heart hospital within the hospital.” The center has advanced operating suites specifically for heart surgery, two dedicated catheterization labs and one combination cath and electrophysiology lab, as well as a multitude of noninvasive diagnostic procedures. The center also offers a two-phase cardiac rehabilitation program designed to restore patients to normal levels of activity and reduce future risk of heart problems. Among the diagnostic tests Baptist North Mississippi offers is HeartScore® (also known as coronary calcium scoring), a special noninvasive CT scan of the heart that measures the amount of calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. Cardiac stress testing is performed to determine how the heart reacts to exercise or increased levels of activity. Ambulatory electrocardiography, or Holter monitoring, measures the electrical activity of your heart while you go about your usual daily activities. A continuous 24-hour recording is much more likely to detect any abnormal heartbeats that occur during these activities. The physicians who practice at our Heart Care Center are highly qualified, board-certified experts who specialize in cardiovascular surgery, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and pulmonology. In addition to their clinical credentials, they are members of a number of clinical organizations and have many years of experience in their fields. In the last five years, Heart Care Center physicians and staff have performed more than 7,000 invasive procedures. Cardiac rehab participants logged in more than 2,000 hours of supervised exercise last year alone. Patients come from 27 counties and several nearby states to receive exceptional heart care services in a warm, caring setting.
