The 42,000-square-foot Baptist Centers for Cancer Care & Diagnostics Center offers chemotherapy, radiation therapy and diagnostic procedures, such as mammograms and ultrasound. The center also has advanced technology, including a linear accelerator, a CT simulator and a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner. New procedures, including brachytherapy (prostate seed implants) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), are performed at the center, which features seven clinical treatment rooms, a laboratory and several other facilities.
Medical oncologists and a radiation oncologist, along with registered nurses and other health care professionals, staff the center. Patients are treated from a team approach, with each member playing a specific role.
Our team of cancer treatment professionals has years of experience in their field and are highly qualified experts. Our physicians are all board-certified in radiation oncology, medical oncology or oncologic surgery, and all our staff hold a variety of degrees and certifications.
But the medical expertise is not limited to the center alone. Many members of the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi medical staff are involved in the treatment of our cancer patients. Weekly conferences and cancer committees constantly engage members of our medical staff. Baptist produces an annual cancer report distributed to more than 300 physicians throughout North Mississippi. The report is designed to educate physicians referring patients to Baptist North Mississippi and the Baptist Centers for Cancer Care & Diagnostics Center.
The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC) Approvals Program recently accredited Baptist Centers for Cancer Care-North Mississippi because our program offers prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent disease, support services and end-of-life care. The ACS has found that the availability of a full range of medical services, along with a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care at approved cancer programs, has resulted in approximately 80 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients being treated in CoC-approved cancer programs. For more information on the CoC, please visit its Web site.
Baptist believes that the best prevention for cancer is found through education and early detection. Reduced-rate mammogram and prostate cancer screenings, as well as educational programs, are performed throughout the year in communities across North Mississippi.
