Baptist Begins New Hospitalist Program
Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi is pleased to provide a hospitalist program to our patients to help enhance the quality of their care while in the hospital. The program is staffed by three local physicians: hospitalist program medical director Kelton Pace, M.D.; Lynn Greene, M.D.; and Jimmy Thompson, M.D. These physicians will treat patients throughout their stay at the hospital and work with their primary physicians to coordinate care upon discharge.
Baptist’s hospitalist program offers greater convenience, enhanced interaction with physicians and more timely care, with quicker decisions involving treatment as situations arise or as a patient’s condition changes, leading to shorter hospital stays.

Baptist North Mississippi to Participate in National Quality Campaigns
Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi is among the more than 3,000 hospitals participating in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s 100,000 Lives Campaign. The campaign explores new proven methods of care for hospitalized patients. Through the 100,000 Lives campaign, best practices are turned into standardized methods of care for patients. Implementing these methods can help increase survival rates for the most critically ill patients. There are six initiatives of the 100,000 Lives campaign:
- Implement rapid response teams
- Deliver reliable, evidence-based care for acute myocardial infarctions (heart attacks)
- Prevent adverse drug events
- Prevent central line-associated blood stream infections
- Prevent surgical site infections
- Prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia
One of the initiatives Baptist North Mississippi is involved in is the ventilator-associated pneumonia effort. By implementing “bundles,” or a group of tasks health care providers perform on each patient regularly, our hospital is striving to improve care for our patients. Each bundle comprises several indicators. For example, the ventilator-associated pneumonia bundle is made up of:
- Elevating the head of the bed 30 degrees or higher
- Turning the patient every two hours
- Cleaning patients’ mouths every four hours
- Treatment for deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a deep vein)
- Treatment for peptic ulcer disease (erosion in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine)
- Daily breaks from sedation
- Daily assessment for readiness to remove ventilator
We have seen dramatic improvements with our patients since Baptist North Mississippi began using the ventilator-associated pneumonia bundle.
Baptist North Mississippi also participates in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Core Measures project, which includes sets of indicators to assure delivery of evidence-based care for specific diagnoses. The Core Measures project includes the following initiatives: acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), community-acquired pneumonia, congestive heart failure and the surgical site infection prevention project. The ASBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.
To earn a Center of Excellence designation, Baptist North Mississippi underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes were collected. Baptist and other centers receiving the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation agree to continue to share clinical pathways, protocols and outcomes data. King and his colleague, Dr. Walker Byars, perform the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and LAP-BAND® gastric banding procedures at Baptist North Mississippi.
