Baptist North Mississippi Opens Center for Breast Health
In an effort to speed the diagnostic process and to better prepare and educate patients, Baptist North Mississippi recently opened the Baptist Center for Breast Health. The center allows Baptist physicians, nurses and mammography technologists to coordinate patients’ care from one central location, making it easier for patients to navigate the breast cancer process.
In addition to centralizing services, the center added a breast health nurse navigator, who has been a critical component to the program’s success. Having the navigator has made it possible for patients to find out faster if they need to have a biopsy. The navigator is paged when the radiologist has a patient who needs a biopsy, and the radiologist talks to the patient immediately after reading the films to explain the diagnosis. The nurse navigator notifies the referring physician of the outcome and asks the physician to make an appointment with the patient’s surgeon of choice as soon as possible. In the past, physicians would receive their patients’ reports the day after their mammograms, making it more difficult for physicians to consult with patients about their results in a timely manner.
The new process is a wonderful opportunity to educate patients on what to anticipate with the biopsy and give them a resource at Baptist for follow-up questions. The Center for Breast Health is improving patient satisfaction and, more importantly, expediting the diagnostic and treatment process.
