Change In Blood Supplier Increases Efficiency, Saves Time For Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi

Donors encouraged to support United Blood Services

United Blood Services of Tupelo is now the blood provider for Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. The two organizations formed a partnership that went into effect June 1, 2005, recognizing UBS as the primary provider of blood and blood products to the hospital. Baptist North Mississippi uses about 300 units of blood a month.

“We are pleased to welcome UBS as our blood provider,” said Zach Chandler, administrator and CEO at Baptist North Mississippi. “Area businesses, churches, civic organizations, students and others in the community can support the United Blood Services’ efforts by sponsoring blood drives.”

UBS has been serving Northeast Mississippi and Northwest Alabama since 1978. The not-for-profit organization provides blood to 21 area hospitals including Baptist North Mississippi’s sister hospitals in New Albany, Booneville and Columbus.

UBS’s main blood supply is located only 55 miles from Oxford, whereas the previous blood provider was located nearly 175 miles away in Jackson, Miss. In addition to joining a closer system of blood banks, UBS has access to blood resources nationwide in the event of a major catastrophe.

“We have called UBS for years to help us in emergencies, and they have provided us with excellent and efficient services,” said Chandler. “We are proud of our new partnership and want to emphasize that only by donating with UBS will your donation benefit patients in the Oxford-Lafayette County community.”

Harry Brown, UBS’ executive director, noted that it might take time for area donors to get accustomed to the change.

“We realize that strong loyalties are built through decades of dealing with a particular organization,” said Brown. “We just want people to know that when they donate blood with UBS, they are really giving back to the Oxford-Lafayette County community. Other organizations may also collect blood in the area, but those donations are not necessarily coming back to the community. We want people to donate blood because people need it every day.”
