Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County began as Union County General Hospital on March 16, 1966, with 65 beds and three stories. During the next 40 years, the hospital would undergo a number of changes, including joining the Baptist Memorial Health Care family in 1987. In addition, the hospital grew from three stories to five, underwent numerous upgrades and renovations, added 88 beds and welcomed several new services and physicians.
The hospital’s first major expansion project took place during the 1970s, when its fourth and fifth floors were added. During that time, the hospital also added a pharmacy and purchasing department. After it became Baptist Union County in 1987, the facility expanded its dietary department, dining room, radiology department, physical therapy department and intensive/coronary care unit. The hospital also added a new three-story bed tower and renovated the third floor with new labor, delivery and recovery rooms, private labor rooms and a new nursery.
Today, Baptist Union County is an advanced, fully accredited 153-bed hospital that employs more than 400 health care professionals. In 2004, the hospital had a total economic impact of $47 million on its community, meaning $47 million in revenue was generated in Union County by or because of Baptist Union County. During the 2005 fiscal year (October 2004 through September 2005), 961 babies were born, 18,176 emergency room patients were treated and 22,785 outpatient visits were recorded at the hospital. In addition, Baptist Union County provided $16.3 million in community benefit during that time, which includes uncompensated medical care and community outreach activities. And the hospital is the community’s second-largest employer.
