How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver!
Proverbs 16:16

Serial casting, a treatment used for patients who experience muscle tightening from certain diseases, is a series of casts that are put on a part of the body to reduce tightness and/or increase the amount of joint movement in patients who have trouble extending their arms or legs. The limb is stretched, then cast, and after five to 10 days, the cast is removed. The limb is then stretched again and a new cast is applied. This process continues until the joint is stretched as far as possible.

Average Length of Casting Series

While the average length of the program varies with each person’s condition, the average length is six to 12 weeks, or six to 12 cast applications.

Who Provides the Service

A trained occupational or physical therapist should conduct the serial casting to ensure appropriate range of motion and tonal measurements are taken during the series.

Benefits

Serial casting is a nonsurgical way to improve movement of a body part. The casting process is painless and has been scientifically proven to improve functional use of the limbs by increasing joint movement and decreasing muscle tightness.

Common Diagnoses for Casting

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Strokes
  • Traumatic brain injuries/spinal cord injuries
  • Club foot deformities
