About Our Program
Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto’s 30-bed Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit offers advanced therapy equipment and friendly staff who help patients focus on their daily therapy goals. Our patients are encouraged to believe in themselves so they can regain their confidence and a high level of independence. To be admitted in the unit, patients must:

Accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities
  • Have the potential to improve functional abilities, i.e. mobility and self-care
  • Be medically stable
  • Require at least two therapies and have the potential to participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy five days a week
  • Be motivated to participate in the program
  • Have sufficient mental alertness to participate in the program
  • Along with their families, have identified a plan of discharge to a homelike setting
  • Require interdisciplinary rehab team intervention
  • Require the medical supervision of a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Require 24-hour rehabilitation nursing

Who We Can Help
We can help people who are unable to perform normal daily activities because of:

  • Stroke
  • Head injury
  • Fractured hips
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Neurological disorders
  • Major multiple trauma
  • Amputation
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Other debilitating conditions resulting in loss of independence in self-care and mobility

Common impairments addressed in therapy include:

  • Cognitive (thinking skills) deficits
  • Loss of mobility or difficulty walking
  • Loss of coordination and balance
  • Difficulty with speech and language
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Loss of bowel and/or bladder control
  • Difficulty with everyday activities, i.e. eating, grooming, dressing, bathing and homemaking skills

Patient-focused Care
Patients and their families are the center of our program. Together with the rehab team, they are actively involved in establishing goals, participating in therapy and planning for discharge to a homelike setting. Our team members include a physiatrist, a medical doctor trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation; rehabilitation nurses; physical, occupational and speech and language therapy staff; and a social worker. Medical and surgical specialists, a clinical psychologist, respiratory therapists, clinical nutrition staff, audiology staff, recreation therapists, etc. also are available as needed.
