What is a pelvic ultrasound?

Ultrasound also known as sonography, uses sound waves to produce images. Physicians use this simple, effective procedure to help with a variety of diagnoses related to the pelvic organs. Ultrasound does not require radiation or dyes. Learn more about pelvic ultrasound.

Where is the Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Center located?

We are located on the north side of the Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto campus.

Where should I park?

Park in the lot by the Outpatient Diagnostics/Cancer Center/Women's Center entrance. This parking lot is located on the north side of campus. View a map of the campus.

What do I need to bring?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and your co-pay (if required).

How should I prepare?

  • Please drink 32 ounces of water 45-60 minutes before your appointment time. You will need to maintain a full bladder during the exam.
  • Dress comfortably. You may be asked to undress from the waist down and wear a hospital gown.

What should I expect at my ultrasound appointment?

  • Please allow 1 hour for your ultrasound appointment.
  • A sonographer will ask you some basic questions, then position you on an exam table.
  • The sonographer will apply a gel to the skin over the pelvic area to help obtain the images.
  • A transducer (wand-like instrument) will be used to scan your pelvic area.
  • During the scan, you may be asked to remain still, change positions, hold your breath, or do simple breathing exercises.
  • After the scan, the sonographer will wipe the gel from your skin.

How will I get my results?

A radiologist will interpret the images, write a report, and deliver the results your doctor via our internal computer system.
