Whole Body Bone Scan

What is a whole body bone scan?

A whole body bone scan is a nuclear medicine test. It uses a small amount of radioactive material and a special camera to help evaluate bone changes—such as bone loss or growths—or injury. Learn more about whole body bone scan.

Where is the nuclear medicine department located?

We are located in the inpatient radiology department of Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto.

What do I need to bring?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and your co-pay (if required).

How should I prepare?

  • Because of radiation exposure, it is vital that you tell us if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are a nursing mother.
  • There are no special dietary or medication restrictions for this scan. Unless contraindicated by another procedure you are having that day, we will have you hydrate before the scan.

What should I expect at my exam appointment?

  • Please allow at least 3-4 hours (divided into 2 visits) for this scan.
  • At your first visit, a technologist will inject your arm with a radioactive isotope. The isotope takes 2-3 hours to circulate and be absorbed into bone. During this time, you may leave the department.
  • At your second visit, we will have you empty your bladder, ask you to remove all external metal (jewelry, eyeglasses, etc.), and have you lie flat on the imaging table. The technologist will scan you from head to toe (30-45 minutes).
  • The technologist and a nuclear radiologist will review the images. Note: There is the possibility that we will need to take more images.

How will I get my results?

A radiologist will interpret the images, write a report, and deliver the results to your doctor via our internal computer system.
