How should I prepare?

  • Because of radiation exposure, it is vital that you tell us if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are a nursing mother.
  • For 2-3 weeks before your I-131 therapy appointment, do not take your regular thyroid medications.
  • For the 4 weeks before your appointment, you cannot have had a CT scan that included an IV iodine contrast medium.

What should I expect at my exam appointment?

  • Female patients < 55 years will be required to have a pregnancy test within 48 hours before your appointment.
  • Appointment time varies; please allow at least 2 hours.
  • Before your treatment, we will perform a thyroid uptake scan. Your physician and the nuclear medicine physician will go over your results and set your treatment regimen.
  • The nuclear medicine physician will go over some post-therapy restrictions and other information with you.
  • We will order your dose (pill form). When you’ve taken your pill, you may leave the department.
