Renal Scan with Flow

What is a renal scan with flow?

Renal scan with flow is a nuclear medicine test. It uses a small amount of radioactive material and a special camera to produce images that help evaluate kidney function, shape, and size. This test can help your physician diagnose various conditions and is also used to monitor postsurgical changes. Learn more about renal scan with flow.

What do I need to bring?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and your co-pay (if required).

How should I prepare?

  • Because of radiation exposure, it is vital that you tell us if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are a nursing mother.
  • Drink approximately 24 ounces of water before your appointment.
  • Bring a list of any current prescription and over-the-counter medications.

What should I expect at my exam appointment?

  • Please allow at least 40-60 minutes for this appointment.
  • After reviewing any medications you may be taking, the technologist will start a saline IV in your arm. (Note: If your test includes Lasix, it will be given during the saline infusion.)
  • After you have received a bag of saline, the technologist will inject a radioactive isotope into the IV.
  • The technologist will position you on the imaging table and take a series of images of your kidneys. This part of the process takes about 30 minutes.
  • After the main series of images, the technologist will ask you to empty your bladder, and will then take an additional image (about 1 minute).

How will I get my results?

A radiologist will interpret the images, write a report, and deliver the results to your doctor via our internal computer system.
