Lung V/Q Scan

What is a lung V/Q scan?

A lung ventilation/quantitative (V/Q) scan is a nuclear medicine test that uses radioactive tracers to assess your lung ventilation (air flow) and perfusion (blood flow). The exam helps your physician see whether there is a blood clot in your lung(s); it also helps pinpoint damaged areas in the lung(s). Learn more about lung V/Q scan.

Where is the nuclear medicine department located?

We are located in the inpatient radiology department of Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto.

Where should I park?

What do I need to bring?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and your co-pay (if required).

How should I prepare?

  • Because of radiation exposure, it is vital that you tell us if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are a nursing mother.
  • There are no dietary or other restrictions before this exam.

What should I expect at my exam appointment?

  • Please allow at least 30–45 minutes for this appointment.
  • As the test's name (V/Q) suggests, there are two parts to the exam.
    • For the ventilation portion, you will breathe through a mask that contains a small quantity of radioactive gas. This gas helps visualize your lungs' air flow.
    • For the quantitative portion, you will be injected with a small amount of radioactive isotope. The injection helps visualize your lungs' blood flow (perfusion).
    • Reviewed together, these two sets of images help determine the presence and size of a blood clot and/or damaged areas.

How will I get my results?

A radiologist will interpret the images, write a report, and deliver the results to your doctor via our internal computer system.
