Gastric Emptying Solid Study

What is a gastric emptying solid study?

A gastric emptying solid study is a nuclear medicine test. It uses a small amount of radioactive material and a special camera to produce images that determine how long it takes a meal to move through your stomach. This test can help your physician diagnose the cause of abdominal pain, frequent vomiting, and gastroparesis (delayed emptying). Learn more about gastric emptying solid study.

Where is the nuclear medicine department located?

We are located in the inpatient radiology department of Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto.

Where should I park?

What entrance should I use?

What do I need to bring?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and your co-pay (if required).

How should I prepare?

  • Because of radiation exposure, it is vital that you tell us if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are a nursing mother.
  • There are no special dietary restrictions or other preparations for a cisternogram.

What should I expect at my exam appointment?

  • This test takes about 4½ hours.
  • When you arrive at the radiology department, a technologist will take you to the imaging room and give you a meal (usually scrambled eggs, 2 pieces of toast, and 6 oz water) to eat before the scan. The eggs will contain a radioactive isotope. (You will not see or taste any difference in the eggs.)
  • The technologist will take a 1-minute image of your stomach. Three more 1-minute images will be taken at 1-hour intervals. You may leave the department between images, but it is very important that you return at the scheduled times. You must not eat or drink anything other than the meal the technologist gives you.

How will I get my results?

A radiologist will interpret the images, write a report, and deliver the results to your doctor via our internal computer system.
