What is a cisternogram?

A cisternogram is a nuclear medicine test. It uses a small amount of radioactive material (a radionuclide) and a special camera to produce images that help evaluate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation in the spinal canal and the ventricles of the brain. Learn more about Cisternogram.

Where is the nuclear medicine department located?

We are located in the inpatient radiology department of Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto.

Where should I park?

Park in the main lot in front of the hospital. View a map of the campus.

What entrance should I use?

What do I need to bring?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and your co-pay (if required).

How should I prepare?

  • Because of radiation exposure, it is vital that you tell us if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are a nursing mother.
  • There are no special dietary restrictions or other preparations for a cisternogram.

What should I expect at my exam appointment?

  • This test requires 3 visits to the nuclear medicine department over the course of approximately 24 hours.
  • In the radiology department, a radiologist will inject a radioactive isotope into the lumbar subarachnoid space. (You have probably heard this referred to as a spinal tap.) After the injection, we will have you lie down for about an hour.
  • At the end of that waiting period, you will be wheeled on a stretcher to the nuclear medicine department.
  • A nuclear medicine technologist will take 1-2 images of the area where you were injected. This process takes about 15 minutes.
  • You will be scheduled to return to the nuclear medicine department in 4 hours, and again in 24 hours.

How will I get my results?

A radiologist will interpret the images, write a report, and deliver the results to your doctor via our internal computer system.
